Problem:

Transitions are jerky on projected screen when using iBook 500.

Solution:

At least one user has had great success by choosing a screen resolution of 640X480. It was also suggested that you go slow through your show as some transitions take a second or so to display. Lowering your colors to Thousands may also help with this.

Problem:

Can't save Keynote file after importing from PowerPoint

Solutions:

Excel Charts
One possible problem is that if you used a feature in the chart that isn't supported in Keynote (such as xy scatter) it won't save.
Either change the Excel chart to a standard chart with no special features, or remove it. You could also save it as some type of graphic image such as a PDF or Pict (has not been confirmed).

QuickTime Movies
Also, there have been some problems with importing Powerpoint files with MANY QuickTime movies in them. This makes the Keynote file too big. One solution is to create a version of the PPT file without the movies, import THAT into Keynote and then add the movies back into your new Keynote file.

Problem:

Can't save keynote file with ".KEY" at the end of the file name

Solution:

There is a known bug that Keynote can't save a file ending in .KEY with the letter in all caps. Change it to .key or just delete it and it should save properly.

Problem:

.key files can't be opened by double clicking them in the Finder.

Solution:

Some users have experienced a problem where their .Key packages show up as folders. One user on the Keynote forum posted a possible solution

Deleting the several Prefs files from your user directory may fix this problem. You can find them here:

~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.LaunchServices.plist and
~/Library/Caches/com.apple.LaunchServices.UserCache.castore

where "~" means your Home directory

Also, you may be able to fix a broken .Key file by using a copy of a good .Key file and swapping the contents of it. You can do this by opening the Package of the .Key file and using the Copy command in the Finder to Copy the old information in the old .Key folder, deleting the contents of the GOOD .Key package and pasting your coppied items into it.

Problem:

Keynote frequently freezes during a show or causes a Kernel Panic

Solution:

Upgrading to OS X 10.2.4 seems to fix this particular problem.

Problem:

Keynote crashes when opening certain .key files

Solution:

There are several things we have found that crash Keynote. These include, but are not limited to:

  1. Bad WIndows TrueType fonts in the system
  2. Corrupted Windows Clip art from a Windows PowerPoint file

Problem:

Can't export Keynote file to PowerPoint

Solution:

Check to see if any of the slides use text boxes that contain blank Text Bullets. That is, the Bullet function is turned on and set for Text, but there is no bullet character set. Setting the Bullet function to None may fix the problem.

Problem:

Can't drag a group of images into the Slide Navigator and have them appear in alphabetical order

Solution:

Set your view in the Finder to Column and not List or Icon. Then drag the images in to the Slide Navigator. They will appear in the correct order.

Problem:

You get a "Not enough VRam" Error when trying to play a show

Solution:

Apple's solution is posted here:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61839

In most cases this happens when you leave Keynote open and then conect a projector to your laptop. Quiting Keynote and reconnecting the projector usually cleaers up the problem.

NOTE: PowerBook G3 (Lombard) users have noticed that this message is permenant. There seems to be no work around for running Keynote on this system. In fact, Apple has changed the Minimum System Requirements to not include that model.

Problem:

MS Design Gallery Live Images can't be Imported

Solution:

Clip art inserted successfully to PowerPoint can be Copy and Pasted into Keynote with no problem. The image is even scalable.

If your downloaded clip art had the .dll tag on the end, change it to .cil and then double click it. This should import it directly into the Favorites folder in MS Art Gallery on your computer. You can then insert it into PowerPoint and Copy and paste it into Keynote.

Problem:

Keynote adds a ~ character to the .Key filename and won't allow you to save

Solution:

Check to see if you have embeded movies or audio files. If Keynote somehow loses connection with these files, you could get this error. Deleting and re-importing the files usually fixes the problem.

Problem:

Upon installing Keynote, no Theme Files are installed, or Keynote is unable to find them

Solution:

Make sure your Hard Drive is NOT formated as a UFS volume. It should be HFS+ (Mac OS Extended). There may be other reasons, but we haven't figured this one out fully yet.

Here's Apple's KB Article on it.

Problem:

You can't save your .Key file WITHOUT Keynote embedding your FULL QuickTime Movie

Solution:

Check out this Tutorial to swap your movie with an alias.
