One other benefit of using the same engine is that you are able to copy and paste objects (such as charts and shapes) from any of the other apps into iBooks Author. This has major benefits if you want to build a new book based off a presentation but don’t actually want to embed the presentation.

One glaring omission we’ve noticed in Apple’s new iBooks eco system…no support for reading iBooks on a regular Mac. That means students who already own a Mac laptop still have to buy an iPad. We’ll see if that changes, but it seems like a big limitation. It’s almost like Apple’s new mantra is, “Develop only on Mac, View only on an iPad”. I guess time (and students) will tell if this sticks or not.

We had also hoped that along with iBooks Author, we’d see the release of iWork ’12, but so far nothing new has been announced or released. Knowing that NEW products from Apple are still supporting iWork, it’s a good sign that the suite has NOT been shelved as some have suggested. Hopefully we’ll see a new copy of iWork this year.

ProfCast Mobile is an app for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad that will allow you to create, give, and record presentations from your iOS device.

Instead of manually numbering your slides (and, of course, including the total number so you know how far through the presentation you are), you can use Slide Runner to add on simple little animations to each slide. The audience is then treated to a man running across the screen, or a balloon floating to the top and then popping. You can also use it to generate simple numbering.

Once you’re finished with your presentation, you simply save it, close it, run it through Slide Runner and let it to its thing. Your numbering or animation will be added to each slide accordingly.

What’s unclear at this point is wether or not you can use the iPad to present to something larger than its built in screen. The iPad tech specs page DOES list a new VGA adapter (Support for 1024 x 768 with Dock Connector to VGA adapter; 576p and 480p with Apple Component A/V Cable, 576i and 480i with Apple Composite Cable) so it’s likely that you’ll at least be able to present (downscaled of course) to 640×480 (not sure how we completely ignored the 1024×768 output spec right there in the description).

We’re wondering if this is why Apple hasn’t given the iPhone or iPod touch the ability to read and honor the timing sprite track in movies exported from the Mac version of Keynote (we may never know).

One great thing though, is that with the 1024×768 screen and a native copy of Keynote running on the iPad, elevator or other one on one pitches are in a whole new realm. Thankfully, pretty much every theme out there is currently available in a 1024×768 format, so we won’t have to reinvent the wheel when it comes to 3rd party themes (though no instruction has been give on how to install them).

We’ll keep you posted as details emerge regarding these apps running on the iPad. For now, here’s a link to Apple’s details on the Apple site.

From Apple’s newly minted About incompatible software page, versions of Keynote earlier than 2.0.2 is listed in the Software restricted from opening section. The good news is that Apple has created a bundle that will bring Tiger users up to date with Snow Leopard, AND with all the Apple iLife and iWork apps. It’s called the Mac Box Set and it retails for $169.

Of course, the question then becomes, will Keynote on 10.6 still open version 1 files? If not, that will hurt the great tools (EazyDraw, svg2key) that have allowed us access to custom shapes. We’ll check this as soon as we have a copy!

UPDATE:

We just checked that page again, and there is NO longer a reference to Keynote 2.0.2. Since we don’t have those older versions installed on the new systems, we’ll have to see if we can track down the old disk and see if it was posted there in error.

Based on customer feedback, version 2.5 includes new functionality and bug fixes. Among the most significant additions to ProfCast is the ability to export recordings in the .m4v format. “A lot of users have requested the the ability to share their recordings in the .m4v format.” explained Dave Chmura, president of Humble Daisy, Inc.
