Got an iPad?

Though we haven’t gotten our hands on an iPad yet, we know many of our readers are starting to test out Keynote on their brand new iPads. We thought we’d post some useful links to articles and resources around the web that might help get some of your questions answered (before or after buying an iPad).

Here’s what we’ve got:

Feel free to add links or questions in the comments of this article for others to gain from.

  2. A few quick items that people planning to use Keynote for iPad need to know:

    - moving anything but the simplest keynote files created on your Mac to the iPad will result in a pretty mangled presentation.
    - the iPad has a limited set of fonts; don’t be surprised if font-substitution occurs
    - once the Keynote file is moved to the iPad, you’ll find that Presenter Notes are stripped (not simply hidden) from the original file; synching this file back to your Mac? Be careful that you don’t overwrite the original!
    - object grouping is lost when importing to the iPad
    - the fact that presenter notes, other items, are stripped from the file precludes the iPad being used as a “touch-up” device for Keynote presentations (which would seem to be one of the potential uses for commuters, business travellers, etc.)

…and don’t even get me started on what they did to Pages…

  3. Just a heads up, when using the iPad for presentation with an external video projector, make sure you go to “Settings/General/AutoLock” and set the preference to “Never”

Otherwise the iPad screen turns off just like your iphone, and you lose the image on the screen, have to restart keynote, and lose the flow of your presentation.

Contrary to what is posted above, I think it’s a good substitute to a laptop for keynote presentation. The presenter notes, having the slide you’re using viewable while presenting on an external display, and keeping the upcoming slides viewable on the side of the screen and not having them disappear after every advance would be my suggestions for improvements included in the first software update.

That and, more fonts, and put presenter notes in.

  4. The worst part of KN on the iPad is the stripping of sound (music).

The rest I can live with.

  5. When will the update for KN iPad take place?
