It’s time for the Keynote hunt! Pore through the video from today’s WWDC Keynote and see if you can find any new features of an upcoming version of Keynote. Post the minutes and seconds where you find your suspected new Keynote feature.

  1. I have to be honest and say I noticed nothing new in the presentation that might hint at Keynote’s future. However, i think there were three very important developments in regards to Keynote.

    1. Time Machine demonstrated a preview panel that could browse Keynote slides.

    2. iChat was able to show Keynote slides, presumably without exporting the slides to a QT file first.

These two snippets lead me to believe we might be seeing some kind of Keynote Viewer plug-in in the future that will allow people without Keynote to view .key files.

    3. Core Animation could have some really interesting applications in regard to the future of Keynote. With An Inconvenient Truth, we’ve already seen how Keynote can be used in compositing. Image how this new Core Foundation will help it take another leap forward.

The slides themselves betrayed nothing to my eyes, but those little snippets hint at an interesting future for Keynote.

  2. I noticed how they appeared to be mentioning Keynote whenever the opportunity presented itself, so it’s not like it’s a back burner app anymore. Those parts that you mentioned also meant to me that some recognition of the format may be available at the OS level. My big question is will the next Keynote ship at MacWorld or when 10.5 ships? If it comes before 10.5, then does that mean no new 10.5 powered features until Keynote ’08?

  3. How do you create the numbers used in WWDC 2006 presentation? I referring to the slides showing “1″ thru ” 10″ features

  4. Apple may have simply used images composed in Photoshop, but it IS possible to get something very much like that using Keynote shapes. On the following page, you can download a graphic and take a look at one way it could be done.

Anyone know if the actual image was generated from a font OR simply drawn that way?

  5. Ken:

You address an interesting point. Many of Keynote’s transitions and builds later became a part of Core Image. However, if I remember my timelines correctly, many of those Open GL Core Image transitions were available in Keynote ’05 before they became part of TIger (which was also a spring release).

On the other hand, the image adjust palette (also based on Core Image) did not show up until the January after Tiger’s release…when it also showed up in iLife.

I’m guessing we may see *some* benefits of Core Animation built into Keynote even before Leopard’s release, but I don’t know about my theoretical Keynote Viewer. (Of course, it would be optimal if said viewer could also be made available for Windows).

Time will tell, but it’s definitely great that Apple keeps promoting and improving Keynote however they can. I have been using it since day one, and it’s one of those rare apps that I find “fun” to use!
